The Mohawk

On fathers day I decided to cut my son’s hair Mohawk, before we went to visit Grandpa. I really thought my dad would freak out about his grandsons hair do, but he didn’t!

We left his hair like this for one day only, and this was a photo op.

The Mohawk really looked cute & suited his personality – WILD CHILD!

Words

Do I put words on my cards or not?

If you want to sell your cards its better not to do so. If you make cards only for friends or family, the answer is relevant that you will do so because words will make it more personal. The choice is however yours.

How do I do it?

Sticker lettering, rub-ons, calligraphic, a variations of plastic, wooden, card-stock or metallic letters are all available from stationery or scrapbook shops. There are also lovely books to guide you in making your own fancy and beautiful letters for both scrapbooking and card-making.

So many of us however believe that we can do it ourselves. These unfortunate perceptions make card-making and scrapbooking become a very expensive hobby to us. Thanks to technology, there is a wonderful machine today which will overcome all your problems concerning lettering or cutting.

The machine is called Quick Kutz (Silhouette Digital Craft Cutter). You connect it to your computer, use any available font or size and ask it to cut whichever word or shape you like. The letters as well as the shapes are cut very precise on paper or card-stock, vellum, photo paper or adhesive card-stock. There is also a drawing facility which you can use to draw your own designs or motifs for card-making or scrapbooking. See samples of swirls, circles and bows which were all cut with the Quick Kutz (Silhouette Digital Craft Cutter).

Mini Albums

I have quite a few mini albums and note sure where to keep them. So I decided to use a blank decoupage jewellery box, as a memory box for my mini albums. All I needed to do was give it a coat of paint & decorate the top of the box, and I now have a beautiful memory box for my mini albums.

Notice Board

As I said before as scrappers we all have tones of scrap papers – so here is another idea for your scraps. I decided to make a notice board for my shop. I tore scraps, stuck them down to my board, stuck down metal clips with big fat glue dots and then added a large flower on each corner, and viola my notice board.

Aspects of Card Making

It will be wonderful to discuss some of the important aspects in card-making with you. You are welcome to let me know whether you agree or differ or even better if you can improve.

Background - This is probably a more important aspect in card-making than anyone of us realizes. If you work directly onto a card, you will notice that it is more difficult to get a pleasing lay out, balance etc., than planning a card with a background. The background paper acts as a unifying factor. Use scrapbook paper, cardboard, handmade paper, stamped paper, collage etc. for the background.

Lay out - You can use only one piece of paper and glue it directly onto the card as a background. · You can also try a few layers of paper with an interesting decorated or cut edge. · You can combine the above mentioned paper and divide your background in 3 or more sections. For each section you can use another colour, texture or decorative paper. If you prefer to stick to your favorite colour, just vary the tones.

Sketch 2 Example 1

Notice that there are 4 rectangular shapes (including card) but their sizes as well as their colour differ. The horizontal rec- tangle breaks this monogamy of the 3 rectangular bars that go in one direction and focuses the eye on section 2 . This is where the focal point of your card will be.

Sketch 1 Example 2

Card Another 3 section lay out that works well is the following. The focal point of this card will be in section 1. See the card.

If one really understands why you are doing something in a specific way, you will know where you are going. I hope that my simple explanations will help you to know that you áre a great card-maker. Keep on trying and enjoy!
